The serial number will be in the format: ‘LLLYYWWSSSS’; where ‘YY’ is the year of manufacture and ‘WW’ is the week of manufacture. The date code can be found in the 4 middle digits of the serial number. In the case of serial number SAD08300D4W, ‘08’ is the year code and ‘30’ is the week code. You can then decode the date use. Buy License, need to check UDI: Buy Smartnet, need to check serial no. Troubleshooting or return, need to check serial no. Cisco1921/1941: Type command “Show version” or check the box tag, or check serial number at the bottom of device. Type command “Show version” Type command “Show version” cisco 2900 router.
Recommended IOL image versions:
Note: The older IOL versions might not work. Avoid using IOL L3 15.5.2T (it has serious freeze console bug after some time of running)

Other versions should also be supported following bellow’s procedure. IOL or IOS On Linux, also called IOU or IOS On Unix. IOL, is a simulator available for Cisco internal use only. IOL refers to the Linux version, compiled for i386 architecture. IOU refers to the Unix (Solaris) version compiled for Sparc architecture. The term IOU usually refers to IOL too. Because IOL is an internal IOS version, IOL can be used by Cisco employees or by authorized customers only. Upload the downloaded image to the EVE using for example FileZilla or WinSCP to: /opt/unetlab/addons/iol/bin/. Type following command to fix permissions: IOL images must end with the “.bin” extension and must be executable. License must be stored under the same path. IOU/IOL license is bound to the hostname and domain name of the server. A test should be made to check if IOU/IOL images can run properly. Google for how to create iourc license file. Bellow is an EXAMPLE how it should look like: If the IOL/IOU instance doesn’t start, then you won’t be able to use IOL/IOU nodes inside EVE. |
IOS 15 is a single software package for the hardware platform that your are using. Now that flash is cheap and large, there doesn’t need to be a different IOS image for the different versions with the advanced features. So you get one software image that has all the features for that platform.
Prior to IOS 15 , we used to have 8 IOS images, all routers came with IPBase image and according to your needs you can choose what IOS image to install on your router as each image had different features than others as illustrated below.
The universal IOS image is loaded by Cisco manufacturing on all shipped routers. An IOS universal image contains all IOS features. Feature sets in the universal image are unlocked using licensing keys, i.e. the level of IOS functionality available is determined by the license applied to the device. A new license only needs to be applied to upgrade IOS functionality on the router. Maintenance upgrades of IOS, i.e. moving from one IOS universal image version to another, does not require a new licensing key. Reboot of a router is also licensing transparent.
Each device ships with universal image, IPBase, DATA, Unified Communications (UC) and Security (SEC) technology packages are enabled in the universal image via Cisco Software Activation licensing keys.
The details of each technology package license can be found in the table below. The new ISR routers also offer a Software Activation feature license and right to use feature licenses. The Software Activation feature licenses use the same Software Activation model as the technology package licenses, while right to use feature licenses are not enforced. Feature licenses work in conjunction with technology package licenses, e.g. the SSLVPN feature license requires a SEC technology package license.

Purchase the software package or feature that you want to install. You receive a PAK with your purchase.
Get the license file using one of these options:
What you will do is Convert the PAK to a license by entering the PAK and the unique device identifier (UDI) into the CLM or Cisco Product License Registration portal
To know what is your UDI , type show license udi as follow
After entering the appropriate information, you will receive an e-mail containing the license information that you can use to install the license
A Software Activation License is an XML text file with a .lic extension and even can be opened by any text editor.
